Abstract

The science of al-Jarh wa al-Ta’dil is an important branch of the discipline of hadith science that functions to assess the quality and credibility of hadith narrators. In the context of the history of the development of Islam, the existence of this science has become a scientific fortress in filtering weak (dha‘if) and false (maudhu‘) hadiths, many of which have emerged due to political, ideological, or inaccurate interests of the narrators. This study aims to explain the meaning and scope of the science of al-Jarh wa al-Ta’dil, identify the criteria for assessing narrators, analyze its urgency in maintaining the authenticity of hadith, and examine its application in the tradition of classical hadith criticism and its relevance in the contemporary era. The method used in this article is library research with a descriptive-analytical approach to classical and contemporary sources in the field of hadith science. The results of the study show that the science of al-Jarh wa al-Ta’dil not only plays a role as a tool for selecting sanad and matan hadith, but also as the main foundation in building objective, accurate, and accountable hadith science. In the modern era, understanding this science is increasingly important to overcome the rampant spread of inauthentic hadith in society.
