Abstract

The existence of the Kempek Typical Islamic Boarding School has a significant economic impact on
the welfare of small traders in Kempek Village. This study aims to find out how the economic activities
of the community, especially small traders, have changed after the increase in the number of students
who live in Islamic boarding schools. Using a descriptive qualitative method, data was collected through
in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation with three main informants: a cuangki trader, a
laundry business owner, and an Islamic boarding school administrator. The results of the study show
that a large number of students creates a stable and sustainable market, thereby increasing the daily
income of traders. Cuangki traders experienced a surge in sales, while laundry businesses received
regular demand that allowed additional capital, labor, and improved family welfare. In addition,
pesantren play a role as facilitators by providing business space and policies that maintain order in trade
activities. The resulting economic impact includes a multiplier effect, an increase in new business
opportunities, and an equitable distribution of income for the surrounding community. These findings
corroborate that pesantren not only function as religious educational institutions, but also as centers for
economic growth that are able to empower the community in a sustainable manner
